Egar City, Hungary

For many people, Hungary begins and ends with Budapest. But if you're looking to explore beyond this beautiful city, Hungary has so much more to offer!

One of the best things about traveling around Hungary is that while it's a small country, there are unique experiences awaiting in every region. From thermal baths in Hévíz and exploring the winding streets of Pécs to marveling at castles along the Danube bend or spelunking in the Aggtelek National Park, no matter your travel style, there's something exciting for everyone to discover here.

So let’s embark on an adventure together and travel beyond Budapest!

Lake Balaton

Easily one of the most notorious destinations in Hungary is Lake Balaton. Serving as Central Europe’s largest freshwater lake, this vacation spot offers a variety of experiences. With an average temperature of 77 °F during summer months, make a splash in its inviting waters or relax on one of many grassy or rock-strewn beaches along the natural coasts.

If you find yourself wanting to sink your feet into a warm sandy beach, check out one of the many luxurious resorts. Enjoy sailing adventures by day while sightseeing historic districts such as Tihany Peninsula; indulge in winery tours around Badacsony Mountain; then cap off your evenings with vibrant nightlife scenes found on south shores for truly unforgettable experiences!

Sopron

Nestled between Austria and Hungary in the foothills of the Alps, beautiful Sopron offers a unique combination of culture, cuisine, artistry and outdoor activities that make it an ideal destination for visitors.

Explore the historic castle district or indulge your palate with traditional Hungarian dishes. While here, you can also take advantage of some amazing hiking trails.

Whatever you decide to do, don’t forget to sample Sopron's famous wines-Sopron is one Hungary’s premier winemaking regions with both reds and whites produced here!

Lake Balaton, Hungary

Aggtelek National Park

Aggtelek National Park is an adventure-seeker's paradise! Located about three hours from Budapest and home to 280 caves of various sizes, it offers tourists a one-of-a-kind experience.

Step into the magnificent Baradla cave and explore Europe's largest stalactite wonderland. Be sure to also stop by the lesser known Peace Cave, a healing haven for anyone suffering from asthma.

Guided tours are available for visitors with varying physical capabilities. For those who wish to stay above ground, Aggtelek National Park is also home to some of the region’s most unique plants and animals as well as quaint villages within its boundaries.

Eger

There's no shortage of sightseeing and history in the city of Eger, Hungary. The mighty Castle of Eger and its nearby basilica are a must-see for any traveler, each filled with stunning views and architecture from centuries past.

Also worth visiting is the nearby Valley of the Women, where visitors can explore winding cellars and enjoy delicious local cuisine.

Last but not least stands the Torok Kori Minaret, where a steep climb 131 feet high merits a breathtaking bird's-eye view. Located 2 hours from Budapest by train, this makes Eger the perfect day trip destination.

Hévíz

Escape to the restorative powers of Hévíz, Hungary-home of one of the largest thermal lakes in the world. Soak up water temperatures ranging from a pleasant 71-100 °F, and benefit from its naturally refreshing cycle as it changes every 3 ½ days.

As if that weren't enough, many luxurious resorts offer visitors world-class spa treatments.

When you're ready for an adventure outside your warm waters retreats, there are plenty of activities such as hiking through forests or attending local food festivals & outdoor concerts. With an unbeatable Mediterranean-like climate, you can enjoy this oasis year-round.

Pécs

Pécs, an ancient city in southern Hungary near the Croatian border, boasts a rich and vibrant past.

Founded by Roman conquerors centuries ago, visitors are invited to journey back through time with remarkable sites such as the Early Christian Necropolis, Pécs Cathedral, the Szchenyi Ter, and the Mosque of Pasha Gazi Kasim.

Pécs is also home to Hungary’s first University, dating back to 1367. Today Pécs is known as a multicultural city and a safe-haven for refugees making it one of UNESCO’s Cities of Peace and a favorite destination among travelers.

Hortobágy National Park

Hortobágy National Park is a truly unique and fascinating destination! Established in 1973 as Hungary's first national park, the land has remained virtually untouched for over 10,000 years.

The alkaline steppe has provided a home to wild horses since the Ice Age–along with other roaming livestock. Nature-lovers will marvel at this most precious of habitats, while budding birdwatchers will stay busy keeping up with the 342 species of birds in the area.

With astounding sights such as the Nine-Arch Bridge and Kareag Windmill you'll find plenty to take your breath away on this amazing journey through history!

Győr

Sitting halfway between Budapest and Vienna, Győr is a captivating place to just explore. Having been ruled by a succession of occupiers, including the Celts (5th century BCE), Romans, Slavs, Lombards, Avers, Magyars, Mongols, it was during the time of the Ottoman Occupation in 1529 that Győr's commander Kristóf Lamberg decided to burn the entire town to the ground instead of fighting the Turks for control.

The town was eventually rebuilt with a castle and city wall protecting it. It was again involved in several battles through the centuries and has evolved today into a prosperous and one of the most fascinating towns.

You can spend an entire day here just walking around seeing the old blended in with the new, learning of the history and cultures that have survived the test of time.

Piac Utca, the major street of Debrecen City, Hungary.

Debrecen

Located in Hungary's Northern Great Plain region, Debrecen has long been celebrated as the intellectual and cultural heart of its surrounding area, even serving as the country’s capital at one point.

Its massive Reformed Great Church is a site you won’t be able to miss as it towers over the city center. Among the many museums the city has to offer, you’ll find the Déri Museum which offers a unique array of fascinating items ranging from archaeological finds to fine art and local craft displays.

Most notable though, is the University of Debrecen. Once known as Calvinist College, it dates back to 1538, making it the oldest continuously operating institution of higher education in Hungary and the city - an intellectual hub since the 16th Century.

From sprawling green mountains to breathtaking architecture, Hungary is truly a one-of-a-kind destination.

Whether you choose to escape to the thermal pools, descend into underground caves, explore the terrain, or lose yourself in the complex and fascinating history of it all, these 10 destinations within hours of Budapest will provide an exciting adventure with enough hidden gems to discover something special each time!

So put on your walking shoes and don’t forget your camera--this amazing trip around Hungary promises moments to remember.
